The YMCA Saint-Roch is a modern, multi-purpose community center (opened in 2020) that includes divisible sports halls, offices, and a swimming pool. The building’s contemporary exterior, designed by STGM and CCM2 Architectes, features STEKAR’s STE-6000 curtain wall system and custom aluminum cladding. A two-storey glazed volume anchored at the main entrance showcases the lobby and gymnasium through a transparent curtain wall that invites the community inside.
This glass façade is paired with staggered aluminum panels inspired by the steep surrounding topography. The panels, in tones of grey and white, provide insulation while referencing geological rock strata, and the curtain wall segments deliver abundant natural light to key areas such as the pool and atrium. Technically, the envelope meets high energy-efficiency standards: the low-U-value curtain wall structure and insulated panels ensure optimal performance even during harsh Québec winters.
The YMCA façade is both welcoming and iconic, reflecting the urban character of the Saint-Roch district and the building’s role as a connector between the lower and upper city.
